So, Scribus has got experimental Cairo support in 1.3.1CVS.

Just

export CVSROOT=:pserver:anoncvs@scribus.info:/cvs; cvs login; cvs -z3 co -r Version13x Scribus

and add '--enable-cairo' to ./configure options. You will need at least v0.9 of Cairo (1.0 preferred).

It's not what you would want to see as production ready as of now, just like the whole 1.3.x branch now is :) Still, hopes are high. At least letters with small font size (like Tahoma Regular 9) look less overantialiased, which annoyed me for quite a long while.
